Pathki Nana always felt inferior to her older sister, Red Willow, who seemed to be perfect in everything. Often found playing alone, the others in her Kootenai village called Pathki "Sad One".
With the help of her grandmother, Pathki Nana undertakes the ritual Kootenai tribal custom of finding her own guardian spirit. In her struggle, Pathki finds herself and solves a long-standing mystery in her village.
