Images of America: Craters of the Moon

More than 100 years of Craters of the Moon history are portrayed in this pictoral guide. Shoshone, Bannock, and other native peoples passed through the area but didn't stay due to the lack of water. A spur of the Oregon Trail skirted the northern edge of the lava fields and eventually a state highway. Eventually, curiosity about this strange area led others to explore this unique landscape. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge established Craters of the Moon National Monument. Now you can explore through these pages the youngest lava flows in the continental United States.
